Alternately, neutral color polypropylene or polyethylene tube can be used if wrapped in aluminum foil. Freeze the tubes at -10 to -30? C. Ship frozen.

Allow sample to clot for 30 minutes, spin at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes and transfer serum to a plastic amber vial. If amber vial is not available, wrap tube in aluminum foil to protect from light. Freeze within 30 minutes and send frozen.

Centrifuge within 1 hour of collection. Immediately separate serum from the cells into a clean, plastic transport tube. Freeze. Protect from light. If unable to centrifuge immediately, sample should be covered with aluminum foil immediately and placed on ice until serum can be separated from cells. Transport to the laboratory frozen.

Platelet-poor plasma: Centrifuge light blue-top tube for 15 minutes at approximately 1500 g within 60 minutes of collection. Using a plastic pipette, remove plasma, taking care to avoid the WBC/platelet buffy layer and place into a plastic vial. Centrifuge a second time and transfer platelet-poor plasma into a new plastic vial. Plasma must be free of platelets (<10,000/uL). Freeze immediately and ship on dry ice. Note: Storage of whole blood at refrigerated temperatures prior to processing may lead to cryoprecipitate formation and falsely low Factor VIII and von Willebrand Factor studies.

Collection Instructions Red Blood Cells Trace Metal: Use the royal blue-top trace metal evacuated tube with EDTA or sodium heparin, for RBC trace metal testing. Packed Cells: Centrifuge to separate plasma from RBC's and discard plasma. Transfer RBC's to a plastic transfer vial from a Quest Diagnostics (trace element and metal free) collection kit or transfer to a plastic screw-cap vial.
