Collect random urine in a sterile urine cup. Transfer to a BD Yellow non preservative tube. Label it with patient's name and the date and time of collection. Refrigerate urine specimen if testing cannot be immediately performed.

Collection Instructions Collect sample at end of shift. Preservative-free urine samples are recommended. Samples preserved with benzoic acid are unsuitable for analysis. Sample must include collection date/time and be received at NMS within 48 hours of collection.

Patient prep: Overnight fasting is preferred. Allow specimen to completely clot. Centrifuge for 15 minutes.

Collection Instructions 1. Patient should void bladder, then drink at least 500 mL (approximately 17 oz) of water. 2. A urine sample should be collected within 1 hour. 3. Pour exactly 10 mL of random urine into a Quest Diagnostics Beta-2 Microglobulin Transport Tube (available through Client Supply). 4. Ship room temperature. 5. Alternatively, if the collection tubes are not available, pH the specimen must be adjusted to between 6 and 8 using 1N NaOH prior to shipping. Beta-2 Microglobulin in urine is unstable in acidic urine (less than pH 6). Exactly 10 mL of urine in the Quest Diagnostics Beta-2 Microglobulin Transport Tube is required to achieve the required pH of between 6 and 8. Any volume above or below 10 mL will result in a pH that is outside the acceptable range.

A minimum of 12 hours fasting is required. Fasting morning collection 8-10 am (diurnal variations cause elevated levels at night). Dietary supplements containing biotin may interfere in assays and may skew results to be either falsely high or falsely low. For patients receiving the recommended daily doses of biotin, draw samples at least 8 hours following the last biotin supplementation. For patients on mega-doses of biotin supplements, draw samples at least 72 hours following the last biotin supplementation.
