Patient Preparation Sample should be collected without the use of a tourniquet; avoid hand-clenching. If a tourniquet has been used, it should be released for one minute prior to drawing blood. Collected blood should be cooled on ice immediately and separated from the cells within 3 hours. The collected blood should be well-mixed and separated from the cells within 3 hours. Freeze plasma and ship frozen.

Collection Instructions Immediately after a fasting specimen is obtained, have patient ingest a 50 g dose of lactose (supplied by laboratory). Draw subsequent specimens 1/2, 1, 2 and 3 hours later. Label each with the specific draw time. Note: Children should receive 1.75 g lactose per kg ideal body weight, up to 50 g.

Collection Instructions Centrifuge serum specimens within 1 hour of collection, transfer serum to a clean, plastic, transport tube(s), and transport at room temperature to the laboratory. For capillary collection, wash hands thoroughly with soap and dry with clean, low-lint towel. Once washed, fingers must not come into contact with any surface.
