...Remove the swab from the packaging and swab any visible lesions. Withdraw the swab without touching the skin. Immediately place the swab into the transport tube so that the tip of the swab is visible below the tube label. Carefully break the swab shaft at the score line against the side of the tube and discard the top portion of the swab shaft. Tightly screw the cap onto the tube.

...Fill out IDPH newborn screening test form with all required information. Perform heelstick. Allow a large drop of blood to form. Touch filter paper to blood and allow to soak through completely in each circle. Total saturation of the circles must be evident when the paper is viewed on both sides. DO NOT APPLY BLOOD TO BOTH SIDES. Use of capillary tubes is not recommended because they tend to roughen the filter paper and cause over absorption. Allow blood spots to air dry thoroughly for three hours at room temperature. Keep away from direct sunlight and heat. Never superimpose one wet filter paper on another before throughly drying.
